Qualifications

Bachelor of Laws (University of Victoria), Master of International Law (University of Sydney)

I joined Cooney Lees Morgan in 2020 returning to the Bay of Plenty after a lengthy stint in China, Australia and Auckland. I work with corporate organisations and individual investors on a range of their corporate matters, including acquiring businesses, divesting or restructuring assets, forming joint ventures, resolving disputes, establishing international or domestic distribution arrangements and implementing their E-commerce strategies.

Growing up in Raglan, Waihi and Athenree I moved to Auckland as a teenager. Between completing high school and studying law at Victoria, I spent two years learning Mandarin at a language university in Beijing. In 2007, I completed my Masters of International Law at the University of Sydney.

I have practiced commercial law in Hong Kong, mainland China, Australia, and New Zealand. Learning Mandarin played no small part in determining my career path and it has certainly been useful whether negotiating cross-border transactions overseas, or here in New Zealand, acting on export-related matters, private client and inbound M&A projects.

Working for international law firms over the course of my career has helped me gain some incredible experiences as a commercial lawyer. My career started out in the M&A/funds management team of Australian firm, Allens, spending six years in their Sydney and Shanghai offices, after which I joined Clifford Chance spending seven years in their China inbound investment practice. I joined Cooney Lees Morgan from the Auckland corporate team at Tompkins Wake where I was a Partner.

Shortly after returning to New Zealand in 2017, I was invited to join the New Zealand Trade & Enterprise ‘Beachhead Advisor’ Programme and feel fortunate to be able to support its customer base as an adviser, helping New Zealand companies grow their businesses internationally.

My wife, Nics, and I, had long harboured ambitions to live in the Bay and bring up our two young children, Jackson and Hunter, here. So when the opportunity arose for me to join the Cooney Lees Morgan partnership in 2020, I jumped at it. We love everything about this part of the world, especially the boating, diving, fishing, and being able to get down to the mountain biking trails and ski slopes further south.
