Qualifications

Bachelor of Laws, Bachelor of Arts (major in Media & Communications, minor in Political Science), University of Canterbury

Having been born and raised in beautiful Ohope Beach, I spent my university years in Christchurch studying at the University of Canterbury.

In 2012 I joined the Property & Development team at CLM where I specialise in residential and commercial property transactions, property development, commercial leases, contract matters, estate planning and asset protection.

I currently oversee eight staff and balance my time between private clients and property developers – one of whom has the South Island’s largest private property portfolio and is one of the top 10 largest building companies in New Zealand.  My team and I take care of all their development work, conveyancing, leasing and financing arrangements and I assisted them to set up a capital fund in 2020 to raise money from private investors.

It was an honour to be named on NZ Lawyer’s Rising Stars list in 2022 and I enjoy mentoring junior colleagues to help them achieve their own career aspirations. Growing people, engaging with others and problem-solving is my favourite part of the job.

Following Owen Cooney’s retirement from the firm in late 2020, I have taken on a number of his long-standing clients and thoroughly enjoy the wide variety of work that I do. I take a pragmatic approach to the law and my strength lies in my ability to relate well to others and put people first.

In addition to my work at CLM, I support a number of organisations in the wider Tauranga community. I am a former committee member and chair of LINKT (the young professionals branch of Tauranga Business Chamber) and hold regular seminars for real estate agents, first home buyers and the banking industry to share my knowledge about property-related matters and how the legal process works.

Albert Einstein once said, “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.” My goal is to make things easy for my clients by giving straightforward and easy to understand advice.

Endorsement:

“Hilary has been acting for us in property and section transactions for several years, along with building contract agreements. She is appreciated by us for her attention to detail and outstanding friendly service.” - Tony O'Brien, Sentinel Homes, Bay of Plenty.

“Hilary's pragmatic approach to problem-solving and undeviating business style has allowed us to rely on her service. As well as matching our slightly competitive nature, she is happy to debate any problem with any solicitor or deflect things back into our office if self-reflection is required… when Hilary tells me she is right, I have no doubt she is right!” - Steve Brooks, Director of Wolfbrook Property Group.

“Hilary has an ability to share her expertise with clarity and context and this was evident at our recent and very successful First Home buyers’ seminar where she presented to 75 prospective and enthusiastic first home buyers. Time is a precious commodity and Hilary has always been prepared to generously give up hers in the interest of supporting business partners to better serve and inform our communities.” - Shelley Keill, Westpac Area Manager – Central North Island Mobile Mortgage Managers.
